Kings Eat First: A New Way to Win Today
In my last article, we talked about moving into a state of flourishing and living a life of abundance.
It introduced the idea of The Big 3 — finding success in our work, relationships, and energy.
Energy, however, continues to be the greatest of these Big 3, and it’s also where so many of sell ourselves short.
To intentionally create energy takes some intentional selfishness. It means carving out some time each day to connect with the Source, to commit to your goals, and to pursue your best self.
The adage about putting your own oxygen mask on first before helping another has been referenced in about every self-improvement article or book I’ve ever read. But it keeps being repeated for one reason.
It’s true.
You’re no good to anyone if you pass out from lack of oxygen or daily exhaustion.
For over four years, I participated in a men’s coaching program called Wake Up Warrior. Garret J. White, the founder and lead coach, would say to us repeatedly “Kings Eat First.”
That message was beat into our brains. Taking care of yourself isn’t a selfish act. It’s actually a selfless act. Unfortunately, it’s one too few of us take to heart.
I recently read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. This book is about the Law of Attraction. In a chapter titled, the “Secret to Relationships,” she expands on this idea of self-love and self-care. It is the pathway to more connection, love and joy.
Instead of regurgitating Rhonda’s words and trying to make them my own, I’m going to quote them directly. I cannot improve on them and she says things exactly as they need to be said.
Your job is you. Unless you fill yourself up first, you have nothing to give to anybody. Treat yourself with love and respect, and you will attract people who show you love and respect.
When you do not treat yourself the way you want others to treat you, you can never change the way things are. Your actions are your powerful thoughts, so if you do treat yourself with love and respect, you are emitting a signal that is saying you are not important enough, worthy enough, or deserving. That signal will continue to be broadcast and you will experience more situations of people not treating you well. The people are just the effect. Your thoughts are the cause. You must begin to treat yourself with love and respect, and emit that signal and get on that frequency. Then the law of attraction will move the entire Universe, and your life will be full of people who love and respect you.
Many people have sacrificed themselves for others, thinking when they sacrifice themselves they are being a good person. Wrong! To sacrifice yourself can only come form thoughts of absolute lack, because it is saying “There is not enough for everyone, so I will go without.” Those feelings do not feel good and will eventually lead to resentment. There is abundance for everybody and it is each person’s responsibility to summon their own desires. You cannot summon for another person because you cannot think and feel for another. Your job is you. When you make feeling good a priority, that magnificent frequency will radiate and touch everyone close to you.
Many of us were taught to put ourselves last, and as a consequence we attracted feelings of being unworthy and undeserving. As those feelings lodged within us, we continue to attract more life situations that had us feel more unworthy and not enough. You must change that thinking.
Unless you fill yourself up first, you have nothing to give anybody. Therefore, it is imperative that you tend to You first. Attend to your joy first. People are responsible for their own joy. When you tend to your joy and do what makes you feel good, you are joy to be around and you are a shining example to every child and person in your life. We you are feeling joy you don’t even have to think about giving. It is a natural overflow.
You must change your focus and begin to think about all the things that are wonderful about you. Look for the positives in You. As you focus on those things, the law of attraction will show you more great things about You. You attract what you think about. All you have to do is begin with one prolonged thought of something good about You, and the law of attraction will respond by giving You more like thoughts. Look for the good things about You. Seek and ye shall find!
The four primary ways to “eat first” are through our food choices, movement, sleep, and peace. These areas are not only the four for which you have the most control, but they are the accelerators and the amplifiers. When you commit to move, eat well, rest, and have a little silence to think and reflect, you will naturally move closer to the best version of yourself.
You will fill your cup.
This is eating first. Do this work, and I guarantee you will exponentially show up better in work and love.
Today and every day, remember your own value.
God made no extra people. You exist for a reason, so celebrate that fact.
Now, go take care of you. Today and every day.
